If you have a flat roof ........... read this!Traditionally Flat Roofs have been covered with roofing felt, lapped with bitumen sealant and covered with more bitumen to give some hold to chippings. Contrary to popular belief the chippings are not there to provide wind protection but are there to provide protection against the sun. Solar heat and UV radiation break down the bitumen, through contraction and expansion, allowing water, which is encouraged to stay on the roof by virtue of the chippings, to penetrate. Chippings also encourage the growth of algae and moss. Instead of flowing off the roof the water flows into the roof. Consequently very few traditionally felted flat roofs are totally effective for more than ten years and many start to pose problems in as little as five years. Replacing felted roofs in close proximity to thatch has always been high risk but this is not a problem with our flat roof system as there is no open flame or high temperature bitumen used during installation.
