Fascia and Soffit Replacement
All to often fascias and soffits are out of sight and out of mind
until something goes terribly wrong - then its a disaster. Why not make
your fascias and soffits maintenance free today while they are still in
good conditions and if they are not the work is even more important.
If you live in a bungalow the fascia boards and soffits are clearly
visible just above your head. The fascia is the face board to which the
gutter is secured. The soffit is the horizontal board that you look up
at from underneath, that fills in the gap between the fascia board and
the wall of the house.
In a two or more storey house the fascias and soffits are a little
more difficult to see and unlike a bungalow it is not always clear that
there might be problems. If in doubt about the condition of your boards
use a pair of binoculars to make a visual inspection. If you are still
in doubt please call us and we will carry out a survey and provide you
with our recommendations.
All too often the fascia and soffit boards are left until it is
almost too late and extensive repairs are required not only to the
boards but the rafters that support the roof and tiles. It is better to
have the work carried out before the boards deteriorate and the timber
has to be completely replaced and possibly remedial work to the rafters
has to be done.
New solid 9mm plastic PVCu board is fitted over existing timber,
wherever possible, but where necessary the existing fascia boards are
replaced with new timber.
In most cases we remove the old soffit boards and fit a maintenance
free interlocking replacement conforming to British Board of Agreement
Standard 83/1185/C to the whole of the property. The exception to this
is where the soffit is made of asbestos, this will not rot and is better
left undisturbed for health reasons. In this case the maintenance free
interlocking soffit board will be fitted over the asbestos soffit.
The barge boards are the boards fitted on the gable ends of a
property. As there is nothing load bearing on the gable ends, it means
no requirement for backing boards. When we take down the existing barge
boards, there is a substantial rafter running directly behind them. This
acts as a good fixing for the new PVCu boards to be fitted. |
